The NHS X Digital Health Partnership Award

The Digital Health Partnership Award has been created to help NHS organisations in England bid for funding to accelerate the adoption of digital health technologies to support patients with long term conditions. The award focuses on how digital products and services can support people to remotely monitor their health at home or in the community. We are delighted to share that MyRenalCare in collaboration with University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth Hospital Trust and Kidney Care UK have been successful in bidding for funding to accelerate and scale the MyRenalCare digital platform in the Wessex Kidney Centre.

The Project

Under the NHS X theme of “Supporting People at Home” the project is focussed on “Using digital health to transform the outpatient care of people with Chronic Kidney Disease.” The purpose of the project is to:

  1. Understand the perceptions and experience of Digital Health in Chronic Kidney Disease. This includes understanding the barriers to adoption of digital systems amongst healthcare professionals and individuals with Chronic Kidney Disease. It will also explore acceptability of the MyRenalCare to health care professionals and patients.

  2. Analyse the health economic benefits of digitalising renal outpatient care using MyRenalCare including;

    • Number of clinic visits and clinic length

    • DNA rates

    • Hospitalisation

    • Ancillary costs (clinic rooms, electricity, admin)

    • Patient Activation Measures (PAM)

    • Clinical outcomes – renal function

  3. Explore the potential for scaling the solution. To date the use of MyRenalCare has been restricted to 100 patients in the West Sussex area (population approximately 250,000). We now intend to extend its use to more than 1000 patients across the entire Wessex Region (population approximately 2.2 million).

  4. Understand the extend of digital inclusivity. This will include participants’ account of how easy the web-app is to access and use.

The Team

The project will be run in collaboration with:

  1. Ardia Digital Health will be providing the use of MyRenalCare, including educational support and technical support for the duration of the project.

  2. University of Portsmouth Department of Psychology will leverage their expertise to understand perceptions and experience of digital health in CKD.

  3. KidneyCareUK will leverage their extensive patient and care provider network to help recruit users for the project.

  4. Portsmouth University Hospitals Trust (Wessex Kidney Centre) will be recruiting their healthcare professionals and patients to use MyRenalCare as well as provide a health economist to quantify the health economic benefits of using the platform.

The project is due to start 1st April and will last for 12 months.
